In 2004, cultivated
area amounted to 8255.6 thousand hectares, with a share of the arable area of
94.6 per cent. The largest part of it was cultivated with potatoes,
accounting for a share of 3.3 per cent in 2004. Cultivated area with
vegetables accounted for 3.0 per cent of the total cultivated area in the
same year.
The share of orchards
and nurseries area increased from 1.54 per cent in 2003 to 1.65 per cent in
2004, in the total agricultural area. Bearing orchards amounted to 190.2
thousand hectares, accounting for a share of 78.2 per cent of the orchards
and nurseries total area in 2004.
In 2004, the most of
the cultivated area was private ownership.

In 2004, the production of
potatoes reached 4047.4 thousand tonnes and the production of leguminous for
beans reached 53.6 thousand tonnes. Between 2000 and 2004, the production of
vegetables increased by 28.4 per cent. In 2004, the production was as
follows: 818.0 thousand tonnes of tomatoes, 350.0 thousand tonnes of onions,
1000.0 thousand tonnes of cabbages and 249.0 thousand tonnes of green
peppers.
During the same year,
the fruit production recorded: 550.0 thousand tonnes plums, 810.0 thousand
tonnes apples, 103.0 thousand tonnes pears, 17.5 thousand tonnes peaches,
98.0 thousand tonnes cherries and 37.0 thousand tonnes nuts.
The production of
canned vegetables declined during the 2000-2004 period, in 2004 accounting
for a share of 82.0 per cent of the production recorded in 2000. The
production of canned fruit was also in decline, 41.9 per cent lower than
2000.
Between 2000 and 2004, exports
of “Edible
vegetables and certain roots and tubers” (chapter 07,
according to the Harmonised System) accounted for a share of 0.2-0.3 per cent
of total exports of Romania in value terms. Imports of this category of
vegetables accounted for a share of 0.1-0.2 per cent of total imports of
Romania, during the same period.

Exports of vegetables followed a
fluctuating evolution, with the lowest value in 2000 (US$ 17.8 million) and
the highest in 2004 (US$ 48.2 million). The exports of “Other vegetables,
fresh or chilled” achieved the highest value in 2004, the most important
being “Mushrooms”.
·
Imports of vegetables had an increasing
evolution, the lowest value being in 2000 (US$ 20.6 million) and the highest
in 2004 (US$ 50.8 million). The main imported groups of vegetables in 2003
were “Onions, shallots, garlic, leeks
and other alliaceous vegetables, fresh or chilled” and "Potatoes, fresh
and chilled".

Trade balance in 2004 was positive at
“Other vegetables, fresh or chilled” US$ 19.1 million, “Vegetables, frozen”
US$ 7.4 million and "Dried vegetables, whole, cut, sliced, broken or in
powder" US$ 4.7 million. The top five partners for exports of “Other
vegetables, fresh or chilled” were Italy 73.4 per cent, Germany, Austria,
France and Hungary, while imports coming from Poland, Turkey, Hungary,
Netherlands and Syria. In 2004 Romania exported "Vegetables, frozen" mainly in Italy 80.8 per cent, Spain,
Switzerland, Germany and France, while imports coming mainly from Belgium
59.2 per cent, followed by Hungary, Poland, France and Italy. The
exports of "Dried vegetables,
whole, cut, sliced, broken or in powder" were oriented mainly to
Italy 91.3 per cent, followed by Cyprus, Spain, France and Hungary, imports
coming from Poland, China, Italy, Hungary and USA.

Between 2000 and 2004,
exports of “Edible
fruit, peel of citrus or melons” (chapter 08, according the
Harmonised System) accounted for a share of 0.2 per cent of total Romanian
exports in terms of value. Imports of fruits accounted for a share of 0.4-0.5
per cent of total imports of Romania, in the same period.
·
Exports followed a fluctuating
evolution, the lowest value being in 2000 (US$ 21.1 million) and the highest
in 2004 (US$ 47.5 million). The groups of products “Fruit, cooked or uncooked
by steaming or boiling in water, frozen, whether or not containing added
sugar or other sweetening matter” and “Fruit provisionally preserved, not for
immediate consumption” were on the top positions in 2004.
·
Imports had the same evolution, with the lowest value US$
55.9 million in 2001 and the highest US$ 117.4 million in 2004. “Bananas,
fresh or dried” and ”Citrus fruit fresh or dried” reached the highest import
values in 2004.
·
Trade balance was positive in 2004 at “Fruit, cooked or
uncooked by steaming or boiling in water, frozen, whether or not containing
added sugar or other sweetening matter” US$ 4.2 million. Top five export
partners were Germany 62.4 per cent, Italy, Austria, Netherlands and France.
Imports came from Belgium 54.5 per cent, Hungary, Poland, Serbia-Montenegro
and Germany. In 2004 trade balance was also positive at “Fruit provisionally
preserved, not for immediate consumption” US$ 3.2 million. The export
countries were Italy 63.8 per cent, Republic of Moldova, USA, Bulgaria and
Germany, the import countries being Bulgaria 42.6 per cent, Poland, Costa
Rica, Greece and Hungary.
During
2000-2004, exports of “Preparations of vegetables, fruit or other parts of
plants” (chapter 20, according to the Harmonised System)
accounted for a share of 0.08-0.14 per cent of total Romanian exports in
value terms. Imports of these products accounted for a share of 0.23-0.29 per
cent of total Romanian imports over the 5-year survey period.
·
Exports recorded the lowest value in 2000 (US$ 9.4
million) and increased at US$ 25.0 million in 2003. In 2004 exports decreased
at US$ 19.8, on the top export being “Fruit and vegetables juices,
unfermented and not containing added spirit, whether or not containing added
sugar or other sweetening matter", “Fruit and other parts of plants,
otherwise preserved” and “Jam, fruit jellies, marmalades, fruit pastas or
puree, obtained by cooking, whether or not containing added sugar or other
sweetening matter”.
·
Imports reached US$ 75.5 million in 2004, after an
increasing evolution. The highest import values were recorded by the
following groups: “Fruit and other edible parts of plants, otherwise prepared
or preserved” and “Other vegetables prepared or preserved otherwise than by
vinegar or acetic acid, not frozen”, the most important being “Olives”.
·
Trade balance in 2004 was positive only at “Fruit and vegetables
juices, unfermented and not containing added spirit, whether or not
containing added sugar or other sweetening matter” US$ 3.0 million. The top
five export partners were Austria 41.2 per cent, Germany, Hungary, Poland and
Republic of Moldova. Imports came from France, Austria, Brasilia, Hungary and
Israel.
Romania’s Fruit and Vegetables Consumption
According to official statistics, the population
expenditure in 2003 on fruit, vegetables, canned vegetables and potatoes
accounted for 15.6 per cent of the total expenditure on foodstuffs. The
expenditure on vegetables and canned vegetables accounted for a share of 44.0
per cent of this. The most bought were the tomatoes and onions.
During the 1999-2003 period, according to CANSTAT
Statistical Bulletin, the monthly average per capita consumption of potatoes
and fresh vegetables is comparable to the level of the candidate countries to
the European Union. For example: quantities between 4.40 kg and 4.68 kg of
potatoes and between 4.39 kg and 4.80 kg of fresh vegetables.
